What is the correct way to add detergent to my dishwasher?

Use only detergent specifically designed for dishwashers. For soft water, use 1 tablespoon (15ml) of detergent for most loads. For hard water/heavy soil, use up to 3 tablespoons (45ml). The detergent dispenser cup has lines measuring 1 tablespoon (15ml) and 1.75 tablespoons (25ml). When using detergent tabs, lay them flat to avoid contact with the cover.
