When should I replace the carbon brushes on the motor?

Replace both carbon brushes when either has less than 1/4 inch of carbon length remaining, or if the spring or wire is damaged or burned. To inspect or replace the brushes, unplug the saw first, then remove the black plastic cap on the side of the motor — be cautious as it is spring-loaded. (Page 23)
