What should I do if my child was born prematurely or has low birth weight?

For infants born earlier than 37 weeks or weighing less than 5 pounds at birth, you must have hospital staff observe your infant in the child restraint for 90 to 120 minutes or the duration of travel (whichever is longer) before the first car trip to check for breathing difficulties or heart rate problems. The restraint must be properly positioned and placed at an approved angle. A caregiver should ride in the back seat to monitor the infant during travel, and the number of trips and duration in the restraint should be minimized. (Page 5)
