How do I clean the air gap, and why is it important?

The air gap protects your dishwasher against water backing up into it if a drain clogs, and should be checked any time the dishwasher isn't draining well. To clean it, turn off the dishwasher, lift off the chrome cover, unscrew the plastic cap, and clean it with a toothpick. Note that the air gap is not part of the dishwasher and is not covered by the warranty. (Page 17)
