How do I clean the air gap to improve dishwasher drainage?

The air gap protects your dishwasher against water backing up if a drain clogs and is easy to clean. Turn off the dishwasher and lift off the chrome cover, then unscrew the plastic cap and clean it with a toothpick. You should check the air gap any time your dishwasher isn't draining well. (Page 17)
