How do I properly use detergent in the dishwasher?

Use only detergent specifically made for dishwashers, and keep it fresh and dry — do not put powder detergent into the dispenser until you are ready to wash dishes. The amount of detergent needed depends on your water hardness: hard water requires more detergent, while soft water requires less, as too much detergent with soft water can cause permanent cloudiness (etching) on glassware. Be sure the control panel lights are off before adding detergent so the cup can close and latch properly. (Page 13)
