What is the proper way to use detergent in my dishwasher?

Use only detergent specifically made for use in dishwashers and keep it fresh and dry—don't put powder detergent into the dispenser until you're ready to wash dishes. The amount of detergent needed depends on water hardness: hard water requires extra detergent while soft water requires less. You'll find two detergent dispensers on the inside door; all wash cycles require detergent in the main cup, and wash cycles with two washes will also use the open cup. Be sure control panel lights are not lit before adding detergent so the cup will close and latch properly. (Page 13)
