How do I clean the air gap in my dishwasher drain?

The air gap is not part of the dishwasher and should be checked at least once a month. First turn off the dishwasher, then lift off the chrome cover. Unscrew the plastic cap and check for any buildup of grit. A toothpick makes cleaning easy. Note that the air gap is not covered by your warranty.
