Why is there a delay when turning on the air conditioner?

When a cooling setting is changed, the thermostat may delay up to five minutes before turning on the air conditioner to protect the compressor. Additionally, there is a built-in time delay on cooling, so you should allow five to ten minutes after changing the setting before the air conditioner starts.
