How do I know whether to set the R-switch up or down?

Set the R-switch to the up position if you have only 1 R-wire (R, Rh, or Rc). Set it to the down position if you have 2 R-wires (R or Rh, and Rc). Your wiring notes from Step 6 will determine which configuration applies to your system.
