How do I verify that the power is off before removing my old thermostat?

Turn off the power at the breaker box or the switch controlling your heating/cooling system. Then, change the temperature on your old thermostat to be above room temperature in heat mode or below it in cool mode, and wait 5 minutes to confirm the system does not turn on.
