What should I do before removing my old thermostat?

First, turn off the power at the breaker box or switch controlling your heating/cooling system. Then, change the temperature on your old thermostat to be above room temperature in heat mode or below it in cool mode, and wait 5 minutes to confirm the system turns on. If you have a digital thermostat with a blank display, you can skip this step.
