Is it safe to put the computer in Sleep mode when leaving it unattended?

HP recommends that you always initiate Hibernation instead of Sleep anytime the computer will be out of your physical possession. Several well-known vulnerabilities exist when a computer is in the Sleep state, which could allow an unauthorized user to access data on your computer, even encrypted data. This practice is particularly important when you travel with your computer. (Page 11)
