Why should I wait 3 minutes before switching back to a cool setting?

When the air conditioner has been performing its cooling operation and is then turned off or set to the fan position, you must wait at least 3 minutes before resetting to the cooling operation again. This precaution also applies after a power failure to prevent the compressor from overloading. Ignoring this warning could cause damage to the unit. (Pages 7, 19)
