How do I add liquid fabric softener to the washer?

Maytag suggests using the Downy Ball® dispenser — pour a measured amount of fabric softener into it, pull the ring tightly to seal it, and place it on top of the load, and it will automatically release at the correct time. Alternatively, you can add it manually by selecting the Fabric Softener option on the control panel, waiting until the final rinse fill is complete, pausing the cycle, lifting the lid, adding the recommended amount, closing the lid, and resuming the cycle. When using fabric softener, always use the Soil & Rinse knob to select a setting with '+Extra Rinse' to ensure no softener remains on clothing. (Page 1)
