My glasses are cloudy after washing — what causes this and how do I fix it?

Cloudiness can be caused by hard water deposits or by etching. To determine which, soak the item in white vinegar for approximately 5 minutes — if the cloudiness is removed, the issue is hard water, and you should adjust detergent amount to match water hardness and ensure you are using a rinse aid. If the cloudiness cannot be removed, it is permanent etching caused by water that is too hot, too much detergent, or prewashing; to prevent further etching, adjust detergent amount, stop prewashing, and only use water heating options when incoming water temperature is below 120°F (49°C).
