What are the safety precautions when working on the battery?

Always wear a face shield, rubber gloves, and protective clothing when working on a battery. Stop the engine before disconnecting or connecting battery cables, and always disconnect the negative (−) cable first and connect it last. Keep sparks, flames, cigarettes, and other ignition sources away from batteries, as they produce explosive gases during normal operation. (Page 7)
