For closet or alcove installation, you need minimum clearances of 1" on the sides, 21" at the top, 5.9" at the rear, and 1" at the closet front. If both a washer and dryer are installed in the same location, the front of the alcove or closet must have two unobstructed air openings for a combined minimum total area of 72 square inches. (Page 2)
