Please read these instructions carefully to help ensure accurate temperatures and safe operation. When used properly, this high-quality product can give you years of accurate, dependable service.

INDICATIONS FOR USE The Vicks SpeedRead Digital Thermometer is a handheld, battery-powered, predictive, digital stick thermometer intended for the intermittent determination of human body temperature orally, rectally, or under the arm, in a home-use environment for people of all ages (infants, children, and adults). It is intended to be used with a single-use, disposable probe cover for all measurements.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

• High, prolonged fever requires medical attention especially for young children. Please contact your physician.

• DO NOTallow children to take their temperatures unattended.

• DO NOTallow children to walk or run during temperature taking.

TEMPERATURE READINGS (Takes approximately 8 seconds) Temperature readings vary from person to person. Although there is no one “normal” temperature reading, a temperature, taken orally, ranging between 35.8°C and 37.4°C (96.4°F and 99.4°F) is considered normal. A rectal temperature is up to 0.6°C (1.0°F) higher and an underarm (axillary) temperature is up to 0.6°C (1.0°F) lower than a temperature measurement taken orally.


The best method to determine your own normal temperature is to use the thermometer when you are feeling well. Record your reading twice a day (early morning and late afternoon). Take the average of the two temperatures. This is considered your normal body temperature. Any variation from it may indicate some sort of illness and you should consult your physician.

BEFORE USE Your Vicks SpeedRead Digital Thermometer is a 3-in-1 thermometer for oral, rectal, or underarm use. Whichever method is used, it is recommended that for 15 minutes prior to use, avoid eating or drinking any liquids, exercising, taking showers or baths, or smoking.

IMPORTANT: Before first use, remove label from the display.

PROBE COVERS Disposable probe covers are provided with your Vicks SpeedRead Thermometer. Place a cover on the probe tip each time the thermometer is used to help prevent the spread of germs.

OPERATING YOUR Vicks SpeedRead DIGITAL THERMOMETER

1. TURNING THE UNIT ON

a. Turn unit on by pressing the On/Off button(Fig. 1).

b. A beep will sound and the display will flash Red/Yellow/Green for 1 second.

c. Wait for unit to get ready

– The display will perform a self-test(Fig. 2).

– The display will show last measurement for 2 seconds(Fig. 3).

– After about 5 seconds, the display will show it’s ready(Fig. 4).

2. SELECTING A TEMPERATURE LOCATION Oral Use

• It is suggested to use a probe cover for Oral Use. Discard the probe cover after taking a temperature.

• It is important to place the tip of the thermometer well under the tongue to get a good, accurate reading(Fig. 5). Place sensor tip in areas marked with “3”. Keep mouth closed and sit still to help ensure an accurate measurement.

• When the peak temperature is reached (usually 9 seconds), 5 beep signals will sound and the “°C” sign will stop flashing. The temperature is now ready to read and will not change when the thermometer is removed.

• Dispose of used probe cover and wash the thermometer as recommended.

Under-the-arm (Axillary) Use This method is used for babies and young children.

• Wipe the underarm with a towel.

• Place the probe tip under the arm so the tip is touching the skin and position your arm next to your body (Fig. 6). With a young child it is sometimes helpful to hug the child to keep their arm next to their body. This ensures that the room air does not affect the reading.

• When the peak temperature is reached (usually 11 seconds), 5 beep signals will sound and the “°C” sign will stop flashing. The temperature is now ready to read and will not change when the thermometer is removed. Note: This method produces a temperature up to 0.6°C (1.0°F) lower than a temperature taken orally.

• Wash the thermometer as recommended.

Rectal Use Commonly used for babies, young children, or when it is difficult to take an oral or underarm temperature.

• Cover the thermometer’s tip with a probe cover and lubricate with a water-soluble jelly for easier insertion. DO NOTuse petroleum jelly. Read the label of the lubricant to be sure you are using the right kind.

• Lay the individual on his/her side. If the individual is an infant, the proper position for a baby is to lay on its stomach with legs hanging down, either across your knees or at the edge of a bed or changing table. This positions the infant’s rectum for safe and easy insertion of the thermometer.

• Gently insert the tip of the thermometer NO MORE THAN 1/2 inch into the rectum. If you detect resistance, stop. Hold the thermometer in place during measurement.

• When the peak temperature is reached (usually 10 seconds) 5 beep signals will sound and the “°C” sign will stop flashing. The temperature is now ready to read and will not change when the thermometer is removed. Note: This method produces a temperature up to 0.6°C (1.0°F) higher than a temperature taken orally.

• Dispose of used probe cover and wash the thermometer as recommended.

3. FEVER INSIGHT®FEATURE Fever InSight helps you to better understand the meaning of your child’s temperature with the colour indicated on the display. The screen displaysGreenfor a Normal temperature, Yellowfor a Fever and aRedfor a High Fever. Five (5) rapid audible beeps indicate temperatures over 38.5°C (101.3°F) alerting that the individual may have a fever.

4. TURNING THE UNIT OFF Turn the thermometer off by pressing the On/Off button. If you forget to turn it off, the thermometer will automatically turn off after approximately 1 1/2 minutes.

5. CHANGING TEMPERATURE SCALE FROM °C TO °F OR °F TO °C With power off, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds until “Lo” (Fig. 4) appears in the screen. Release and press the power button to switch from the current scale to the alternate scale and release. After about 3 seconds the unit is ready to take a reading (°C or °F symbol starts flashing).

6. TO RECALL THE LAST TEMPERATURE When the thermometer is turned on, the display will show a test, after which the last measured temperature will be shown for approximately 2 seconds on the LCD display.

CARE AND CLEANING

• In order to avoid contamination we recommend cleaning the thermometer after every use by washing with soap and warm water or rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol). This cleaning method will not affect the accuracy of your thermometer.

• Wipe dry with soft cloth.

• DO NOTBOIL OR CLEAN IN DISHWASHER. This will cause the thermometer to no longer function and will void the warranty.

• DO NOTwash the unit with any thinner or chemical solvent.

• Store your thermometer in a dry location free from dust and contamination and away from direct sunlight.

SPECIFICATIONS

Battery Life: 500 readings after storage for 1 year or using 1 time every other day for 2 years. Temperature Range: 32.0°C~43°C (89.6°F-109.4°F). If less than 32°C (89.6°F), “Lo” is displayed.

If more than 43°C (109.4°F), “Hi” is displayed. “BPA Free” Implies: 1. Plastics used to make the thermometer are BPA Free

Beeper: 5 audible double beeps will sound when peak temperature is reached. For temperatures over 38.5°C (101.3°F)

5 rapid audible beeps will sound. Error Messages: The display will read “Err” when a malfunction occurs and the unit will power off after 1 minute. Accuracy in Water-bath: +/- 0.1°C (+/- 0.2°F) between 35.5°C - 41.6°C (96.0°F - 107.0°F) at room temperature of 21.6°C (71°F).

Determination of accuracy in a water-bath requires accessing a special test mode. There is no difference or correction between the water-bath reading and the predictive reading for this thermometer. Please contact Helen of Troy for instructions related to use in water-bath mode.

STORAGE AND USE Operating or storing outside these ranges and dropping the thermometer may negatively impact the measurement and potentially damage the thermometer:

• Operating environment must be between 10°C and 40°C.

• Operating and storage environment must be between 15-95% relative humidity.

• Store between -25°C and 60°C.

• If core body temperature is lower than ambient temperature the reading may be negatively impacted.

CHANGING THE BATTERIES The Vicks SpeedRead Digital Thermometer features a long life battery. When the “ ” appears and flashes in the center top of the display, the battery is exhausted and needs replacing.

1. Using a coin, unlock the battery cover and carefully remove the battery with a non-metallic instrument.

2. Replace the battery with a CR1632 silver oxide type or equivalent. Insert the new battery with the positive (+) side facing the battery cover.

3. Carefully replace the battery cover and, using a coin, tighten the cover.

4. Ensure the battery door is completely secure after replacing the battery.

To protect the environment, dispose of empty batteries at appropriate collection sites according to national or local regulations. Keep out of reach of young children, elderly and pets.

MESURES DE TEMPÉRATURE (prennent environ 8 secondes) Les relevés de température varient d’une personne à l’autre. La meilleure façon de déterminer sa température normale est de la mesurer quand on se sent bien. Enregistrer la température deux fois au cours de la journée (tôt le matin et en fin d’après-midi). Faire la moyenne des deux mesures : on considère cette moyenne comme la température corporelle normale. Tout écart avec celle-ci peut indiquer la présence d’une maladie quelconque; il faudrait alors consulter un médecin. AVANT TOUTE UTILISATION Le thermomètre numérique SpeedRead Vicks est un thermomètre 3 en 1 qui convient pour prendre la température buccale, rectale ou axillaire. Quelle que soit la méthode utilisée, la personne doit éviter de manger, boire, faire une activité physique, prendre une douche ou un bain, ou fumer pendant les 15 minutes qui précèdent la mesure. 1. MISE EN MARCHE DE L’APPAREIL

a. Appuyer sur le bouton marche/arrêt pour mettre le thermomètre en marche(Fig. 1).

b. Un bip retentit et l’écran clignote rouge, jaune et vert pendant 1 seconde.

c. Attendre que le thermomètre soit prêt :

– l’affichage effectue une autovérification(Fig. 2);

– l’écran affiche la dernière mesure prise(Fig. 3)pendant 2 secondes;

– après environ 5 secondes, l’écran indique que le thermomètre est prêt(Fig. 4).

2. CHOIX DE LA MÉTHODE Voie buccale

• Quand on utilise le thermomètre par voie buccale, il est suggéré d’utiliser un protecteur de sonde. Jeter le protecteur après la prise de la température.

• Il est important de bien placer l’embout du thermomètre sous la langue afin que la mesure de la de température soit exacte(Fig. 5).Placer l’embout de la sonde sur l’une des zones marquées d’un «3». Garder la bouche fermée et ne pas bouger pour assurer une mesure précise.

• Quand la température atteint son point culminant (habituellement après 9 secondes), 5 bips retentissent et le symbole « °C » arrête de clignoter. On peut maintenant lire la température; elle ne changera pas au retrait du thermomètre.

• Jeter le protecteur de sonde utilisé et laver le thermomètre tel que recommandé. Voie axillaire (sous l’aisselle) On utilise cette méthode avec les bébés et les jeunes enfants.

• Essuyer l’aisselle avec une serviette.

• Placer l’embout sous le bras de façon que le capteur touche la peau. Abaisser ensuite le bras le long du corps(Fig. 6). Il est parfois utile de serrer un jeune enfant dans ses bras pour garder son bras près du corps. Cela aide à tenir le thermomètre en place et assure que l’air ambiant n’influe pas sur le relevé.

• Quand la température atteint son point culminant (habituellement après 11 secondes, mais cela est parfois plus long avec cette méthode), 5 bips retentissent et le symbole « °C » arrête de clignoter. • Laver le thermomètre tel que recommandé. Voie rectale On utilise cette méthode habituellement avec les bébés, les jeunes enfants ou quand il est difficile de prendre la température buccale ou axillaire.

• Couvrir l’embout du thermomètre d’un protecteur de sonde, puis lubrifier avec une gelée soluble dans l’eau afin de faciliter l’insertion. NE PASutiliser de la gelée de pétrole. Lire l’étiquette du lubrifiant pour s’assurer qu’on utilise la bonne gelée.

• La personne doit être étendue sur le côté. S’il s’agit d’un bébé, la position appropriée est la suivante : couché sur le ventre, les jambes pendantes, soit sur les genoux de sa maman, soit au bord d’un lit ou d’une table à langer. Le rectum de l’enfant est ainsi dans une position où l’insertion du thermomètre est sûre et facile.

• Insérer doucement l’embout du thermomètre dans le rectum, à une profondeur MAXIMALE de 1,3 cm (0,5 po). Si on sent une résistance, arrêter. Tenir le thermomètre en place pendant la mesure.

• Quand la température atteint son point culminant (habituellement après 10 secondes), 5 bips retentissent et le symbole « °C » arrête de clignoter. On peut maintenant lire la température; elle ne changera pas au retrait du thermomètre. Remarque : Cette méthode donne une température jusqu’à 0,6 °C (1,0 °F) plus élevée qu’une température buccale.

• Jeter le protecteur de sonde utilisé et laver le thermomètre tel que conseillé.

3. FONCTION FEVER INSIGHT

Le code couleur de la fonction Fever InSight vous aide à interpréter et à mieux comprendre une température. Affichage à code couleur :Vertindique que la température est normale, Jauneindique la présence de fièvre etRouge, une forte fièvre. Cinq (5) bips audibles rapides indiquent que la température dépasse 38,5°C (101,3°F), signe de forte fièvre possible.

4. MISE HORS TENSION DE L’APPAREIL Pour éteindre le thermomètre, appuyer sur le bouton Marche/Arrêt. Si on oublie de le mettre hors tension, le thermomètre s’éteint automatiquement après environ 1,5 minute.

5. CHANGEMENT DE L’ÉCHELLE DE TEMPÉRATURE DE °C À °F OU VICE VERSA L’appareil étant éteint, presser le bouton marche/arrêt sans le relâcher pendant environ 5 secondes, soit jusqu’à ce que « Lo » (fig. 4) s’affiche. Le relâcher et appuyer sur le bouton marche/arrêt pour passer de l’échelle actuelle à l’autre échelle puis le relâcher. L’appareil est prêt à faire un relevé après environ 3 secondes (le symbole °C ou °F commence à clignoter).

6. RAPPEL DE LA DERNIÈRE TEMPÉRATURE À l’allumage du thermomètre, l’autotest apparaît à l’écran à cristaux liquides, puis la dernière mesure s’affiche pendant environ 2 secondes.

UTILISATION ET RANGEMENT

• Pour éviter toute contamination, nous recommandons de nettoyer le thermomètre après chaque utilisation en le lavant avec du savon et de l’eau tiède ou de l’alcool à friction (70 % d’alcool isopropylique). Cette méthode de nettoyage n’affectera pas la précision du thermomètre.

• Essuyer à l’aide d’un chiffon doux.

•NE PASMETTRE DANS L’EAU BOUILLANTE OU PASSER AU LAVE-VAISSELLE. Ceci endommagerait le thermomètre et annulerait la garantie.

•NE PASnettoyer le thermomètre avec un diluant ou un solvant chimique, quel qu’il soit.

5 bips audibles rapides retentissent. Messages d’erreur : L’afficheur indique « Err » en cas de défaut de fonctionnement et l’appareil s’éteint au bout d’une minute. Précision dans l’eau du bain : +/- 0,1 °C (+/- 0,2 °F) entre 35,5 et 41,6 °C (96 et 107 °F) à une température ambiante de 21,6 °C (71 °F).

Pour déterminer la précision de la température de l’eau du bain, il faut avoir accès à un mode de test spécial. Il n’y a pas de différence ou de correction entre la lecture de l’eau du bain et la lecture prévue avec ce thermomètre. ENTRETIEN ET UTILISATION Le fonctionnement et le rangement à l’extérieur des températures indiquées ci-dessous peuvent avoir un effet négatif sur la mesure de la température, de même si vous échappez l’appareil, et possiblement endommager le thermomètre :

• Utilisation du thermomètre : la température doit se situer entre 10 °C et 40 °C.

• Utilisation et stockage du thermomètre : le taux d’humidité relative doit se situer entre 15 et 95 %.

• Ranger l’appareil entre -25 °C et 60 °C.

• Si la température corporelle est inférieure à la température ambiante, la lecture peut être influencée négativement.

REMPLACEMENT DE LA PILE Le thermomètre numérique SpeedRead Vicks est vendu avec une pile longue durée sans mercure. Quand le signe « » centré au haut de l’écran clignote, c’est que la pile est faible et doit être remplacée.

1. À l’aide d’une pièce de monnaie, dégager le couvercle du compartiment de la pile et enlever celle-ci avec précaution à l’aide d’un instrument non métallique.

2. Remplacer la pile par une autre à l’oxyde d’argent de type CR1632, ou l’équivalent. Insérer la pile neuve en orientant sa borne positive (+) vers le couvercle du compartiment de la pile.

3. Remettre le couvercle du compartiment de la pile avec précaution. À l’aide d’une pièce de monnaie, visser le couvercle en place.

4. S’assurer que le couvercle du compartiment de la pile est bien fermé après avoir remplacé la pile.

Pour protéger l’environnement, éliminer les piles usées aux sites de collecte appropriés, conformément à la réglementation nationale ou municipale. Garder hors de portée des enfants, des aînés et des animaux familiers.
