How much detergent should I use in the dishwasher?

The amount of detergent depends on your water hardness and dish soil level. For soft water (0-2 grains per U.S. gallon) with light soil, use 4 tsp (20 mL) in the Main Wash section; for hard water (7+ grains per U.S. gallon) with heavy soil, fill the cup completely with up to 9 tsp (45 mL). Only use automatic dishwashing detergent, and store it tightly closed in a cool, dry place for best results. (Page 13)
