How do I safely add charcoal or wood during cooking?

First, remove the dome lid by tilting it toward you so heat and steam escape away from your face, and stand back a safe distance before carefully opening the door. Use long cooking tongs to lightly brush off ashes on hot coals, then carefully add charcoal and/or wood without stirring up ashes and sparks. Never add charcoal lighting fluid to hot or even warm coals, as flashback may occur causing severe burns. (Page 2)
