What should I do if there's an odor when I first run the heater?

This is normal and safe. The heater has a surface coating on internal parts that reacts with the parts for the first several hours of operation to permanently protect them. If you are sensitive to the odor, run the heater in a well-ventilated area until the odor dissipates.
