Why does my fireplace smell when I first turn on the heater?

This is normal and safe. The heater has a surface coating on the internal parts that reacts with them during the first several hours of operation to permanently protect them. If you are sensitive to the odor, run the heater in a well-ventilated area until the odor dissipates (Page 7).
