How do I clean the air gap in my dishwasher drain line?

Turn off the dishwasher and lift off the chrome cover. Unscrew the plastic cap and clean it with a toothpick. The air gap protects against water backing up into the dishwasher if a drain clogs, though it is not part of the dishwasher and is not covered by warranty.
