How do I clean the air gap in my dishwasher drain?

The air gap is a plumbing device that is not part of the dishwasher and is not covered by warranty. Check it at least once a month. With most types, turn off the dishwasher, lift off the chrome cover, then unscrew the plastic cap and check for any buildup of grit. A toothpick makes cleaning easy. Clean the air gap any time your dishwasher isn't draining well.
