Why is my refrigerator motor running for long periods or starting and stopping frequently?

Modern refrigerators with more storage space and larger freezer compartments require more operating time than older models. The temperature control starts and stops the motor to maintain even temperatures, which is normal operation. If the refrigerator is new, it usually requires 24 hours to completely cool down. Large amounts of food being cooled, hot weather, or frequent door openings can also extend operating time. Check that the grille and condenser are clean, as dirty condenser coils can cause longer run times. (Pages 15-16)
