When should I replace the batteries and what type should I use?

You should install fresh batteries immediately when the low battery icon appears, which shows up about two months before the batteries are depleted. Even if the icon hasn't appeared, replace batteries once a year or before leaving home for more than a month. Alkaline AA batteries are recommended. (Page 6)
