What does it mean when 'Cool On' or 'Heat On' is flashing on the display?

This indicates the built-in compressor protection feature is engaged. Damage can occur if the compressor is restarted too soon after shutdown, so the thermostat forces the compressor to wait a few minutes before restarting. When the safe wait time has elapsed, the message stops flashing and the compressor turns on. (Page 5)
