Why is ink being used even when I'm not printing?

Ink from the cartridges is used during the initialization process, which prepares the printer and cartridges for printing, and during the printhead servicing process, which keeps print nozzles clear and ink flowing smoothly. Additionally, some residual ink is left in the cartridge after it is used. (Page 2)
