Wear approved face protection (helmet or shield) with proper shade filter lenses to protect from arc rays; ANSI Z49.1 suggests a No. 9 shade minimum for cutting currents under 300 amperes. Wear oil-free protective garments including leather gloves, heavy shirt, cuffless trousers, high shoes, and cap. Remove all flammables within 35 feet of the cutting arc. Maintain a fire extinguisher nearby and watch for fire. Connect the work cable as close to the cutting area as practical. Keep your head out of fumes and ensure adequate ventilation.
