How do I raise the bobbin thread properly?

Hold the upper thread with your left hand and turn the handwheel (1) towards you counterclockwise, lowering then raising the needle. Gently pull on the upper thread to bring the bobbin thread up through the needle plate hole (2). Then lay both threads to the back under the presser foot (3). (Page 1 — Maintenance)
