How do I prepare the machine if I won't be using it for an extended period?

With the machine on and all buttons lit, press and hold the power button and the caffè crema button for about 5 seconds until 2 beeps sound, then remove the water tank. The pump will automatically remove residual water from the system and the machine will switch to standby when done. Also empty the bean container, drip tray, and coffee grounds container for hygiene reasons.
