What kind of damage might hydrogen gas cause?

Hydrogen gas can be produced in a hot water system not used for over two weeks and is explosive. Before using the washing machine, turn on all hot water faucets and let water flow from each for several minutes to release accumulated hydrogen gas. Avoid smoking or open flames during this time.
