How do I prevent cloudiness or etching on glassware?

Cloudiness on glassware, called etching, is caused by a combination of soft water and too much detergent and is permanent. To prevent this, use less detergent if you have soft water, and wash glassware in the shortest cycle that will get them clean. Also lower the water heater temperature if it exceeds 150°F.
