What does the white dust accumulation mean?

White dust is caused by minerals in hard water, not a defect in the humidifier. Using distilled water and a demineralization cartridge will help reduce white dust accumulation. The cartridge should be replaced every 30-40 fillings or more frequently if using very hard water. (Page 5-6, 12)
