What does the espresso pressure gauge indicate during extraction?

The gauge has three zones: the low pressure pre-infusion zone at the start indicates the machine is in low pressure mode gently expanding grinds; the middle ideal espresso zone indicates extraction at proper pressure; and the upper over-extracted zone indicates too much pressure resulting in dark, bitter espresso. The lower under-extracted zone indicates insufficient pressure resulting in watery, weak espresso.
