What are the important safety precautions before measuring resistance or capacitance?

Before testing resistance, diodes, capacitance, or continuity, disconnect all power to the circuit and discharge all high-voltage capacitors. Do not apply voltage to the test leads when the multimeter is in the Ohms testing setting, as damage can occur to the meter and the fuse may blow. Do not switch between testing modes with the multimeter connected to a circuit.
