What are the best practices to prevent odors from developing in my washer?

Always follow the detergent manufacturer's instructions and never use more than the recommended amount of detergent, as excess detergent and soil residue buildup can cause undesirable odors. Use warm and hot wash water settings sometimes rather than exclusively cold water washes. Always leave the washer lid open between uses to help dry out the washer and prevent the buildup of odor-causing residue. (Page 6)
