Common Questions
25 totalHow often should I clean the dishwasher filters?
You should clean both your upper and lower filters and rinse them under running water at least once a month. Additionally, the dishwasher itself should be cleaned approximately every 30 days for optimal performance.
What are the signs that my filter needs cleaning?
The filters may need to be cleaned when there are visible objects or soils on the Upper Filter Assembly, there is degradation in cleaning performance with soils still present on dishes, dishes feel gritty to the touch, or there is smell or odors coming from the dishwasher.
Do I need to hand wash my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher?
No, you do not need to hand wash your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher. The best way to prepare dishes is to simply scrape large food particles off them and then load them into the dishwasher. Hand washing dishes before dishwasher use can cause white etching on your dishes over time, which is permanent and cannot be removed.
How do I clean Filter Style 1?
Turn the upper filter assembly ¼ turn counterclockwise and lift out, then gently pull apart to separate the upper filter assembly. Rinse the filter under running water until most soils are removed, using a soft brush if necessary for hard-to-remove soils or calcium deposits. Then reinstall the filter.
What is the foreign object cup and how do I maintain it?
The foreign object cup is located in the front and below the lower rack and protects the pump from large objects entering it. If the cup fills up with particles or objects, depress the tab in the center and pull up on the cup to remove it, dispose of the contents, and then replace the cup by pushing it down to lock in place.
What is Filter Style 2?
Filter Style 2 is a maintenance-free filter system that does not require any regular cleaning or maintenance. It only requires maintenance of the foreign object cup when it fills up with particles or objects.

Cleaning the Filter - Dishwasher Possible Solutions Does the filter need to be cleaned? The filters may need to be cleaned when: • Visible objects or soils are on the Upper Filter Assembly. • There is degradation in cleaning performance (soils still present on dishes). • Dishes feel gritty to the touch. • Smell or odors coming from the dishwasher. Your dishwasher has the latest technology in dishwasher filtration. This triple filtration system minimizes sound and optimizes water and energy conservation while providing optimal cleaning performance. Regular maintenance of your filters will sustain peak cleaning performance. We recommend cleaning both your upper and lower filters and rinsing them under running water at least once a month. IMPORTANT: To prevent damage to the dishwasher, do not operate it without properly installing the filters. Be sure the lower filter is securely in place and the upper filter assembly is locked into place. If the upper assembly turns freely, it is not locked into place. Basic Dishwasher Filter Information Dishwashers are meant to wash and clean your dishes. With that in mind, you do not need to hand wash your dishes before placing them in the dishwasher. If dishes are cleaned before dishwasher use, over time, the detergent can cause a white etching on your dishes. This etching is permanent and cannot be removed. Remove residue from detergents by cleaning the interior once a month. See symptom for "Cleaning the Interior" listed above. The best way to prepare your dishes for the dishwasher is to scrape large food particles off your dishes. Then load the dishes into the dishwasher. It is not necessary to wash or even rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. If you do not have a full load, or you do not want to run it immediately, run a "Rinse and Hold" or "Rinse Only" cycle (on some models) on your dishwasher (without detergent). This keeps the dishes moist and eliminates odor build-up. Run this cycle every 24 hours until you have a full load, and then run a complete cycle. https://producthelp.whirlpool.com/Dishwashers/Dishwasher/Other/Cleaning_and_Odor/Cleaning_and_Maintenance/Cleaning_… Updated: Mon, 06 Apr 2026 22:35:01 GMT Powered by 1
